Supreme Court Elects Rick Caruso As LA Mayor In 5-4 Vote

Rick Caruso's right to be mayor of Los Angeles was enshrined by the United States Supreme Court.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—In a controversial 5-4 decision that will reshape the country’s second-largest city, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of billionaire shopping mall mogul Rick Caruso today in his bid to become mayor of Los Angeles. “Because the Constitution does not expressly permit Black Americans or women to hold office, there is no precedent for Representative Karen Bass to serve as mayor of Los Angeles,” Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote in the Court’s majority opinion, adding that Caruso’s land ownership in the form of commercial real estate uniquely endows him with a Constitutional right to the mayoral office. “Not only is Los Angeles’ runoff election between Rep. Bass and Mr. Caruso unconstitutional, but Mr. Caruso should also be permitted to maintain control of his commercial assets while governing them, as doing so is protected free speech under the First Amendment.” In a concurring opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas wrote that the Constitution does not mention the state of California, nor was it signed by any of the state’s representatives, raising questions about its legal status as a subnational entity.
